the San Juans by Motorcycle Worried about the long wait horror stories for ferries to the islands? Motorcycles are typically loaded first on the ferry, regardless of how long the cagers have been sitting there. If that's not enough incentive, the bike is less than half the charge of an auto. Once you arrive, the scenic twisty roads are perfect for motorcycles. If you want to "island hop", it generally works best to start with Friday Harbor. Your ticket is for a round trip, so as long as you're going in the Anacortes direction on the ferry schedule, you don't need another ticket to board. The islands generally get less than half the rainfall of Seattle and more than twice as many sunny days. That means if you choose to arrive during the winter, you can test that new rain gear on the interstate and will probably enjoy clear skies after you arrive.
